Bank or Credit Union? Which Best Suits You?

Friday, May 8th, 2009

If you are feeling at your wit’s end with you bank, odds are you’re not alone. Banks are notorious for fees, hidden penalties, and poor interest rates. You do have options when it comes to managing your money. A credit union just might be the right choice for you. See below for some pointers on credit unions and then compare to your current banking situation. Decide which financial institution is best for your needs.

Member-Owned: Since credit unions are member-owned, you actually have a part in the ownership in the enterprise if you have an account. This results in an elevated quality in customer service. You most likely will not be seen as just another number.

Non-profit: Better interest rates and few fees are the benefits of a credit union being a not-for-profit organization. If the credit union were to make profits, they are distributed as dividends among their members. This element of credit unions is one of the biggest advantages they have over banks.

No Taxes: Since credit unions are not-for-profit they are exempt from most state and federal taxes. This status allows credit unions to improve their interest rates, reduce fees, and cutting their telephone hold time.

Spring Allergies: Fact vs. Fiction

Friday, May 8th, 2009

FACT: Short-haired pets are not any better for your allergies. It is the dander and other particles that animals’ skin produces that causes people’s reaction, so it does not matter the length of hair.

FICTION: Desert environments ease allergy symptoms caused by pollen. The desert has its own set of tress and grasses such as mesquite trees and sage, which also produce pollen.

FICTION: If you don’t have allergies as a child, you won’t get them as an adult. Allergies can develop at any time in life, although children with allergies are more likely to have them as adults, too.

FACT: Only a relatively few foods cause the majority of allergies. Eight foods—milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, wheat, soy, peanuts, and treenuts—cause the majority of allergies.

FACT: Dust mites, a common trigger of year-round allergies, are microscopic living things. These organisms are founds thought the home.

FICTION: A severe cold can develop into long-term allergies if the cold is not treated properly. Although colds and allergies may have similar symptoms, colds do not turn into allergies.

Stay Focused! Tips on Improving Your Concentration

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Do you often find you have too many things to do and not enough time to do them? In today’s society, multi-tasking is a necessary aspect for successful living. But, with so many things to do it’s sometimes difficult to focus. In these cases concentration is the key. The easiest way to improve your concentration is to be healthy. Try to follow the following so your ability to focus will be crystal clear.

Sleep:
It’s difficult to concentrate when you’re drowsy. Sleep experts advise to get plenty of sleep each night, but not too much. The ideal amount of sleep is eight hours each night. If you can’t manage eight at least try for six hours. So, feel free to push the snooze button for a few more minutes of peaceful slumber.

Eat Healthy: When your stomach is rumbling—and all you can think of is food—it is hard to focus on your task at hand. Be sure to eat three healthy meals a day with some snacks in between. Be careful not to overeat since feeling groggy will only hinder your concentration.

Exercise: Once again, it’s hard to concentrate when if you’re feeling sluggish. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day to help stimulate your brain!

6 Ways to Save Water

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Have you ever considered how many gallons you could save each year by simply following a few tips?

Turn Off the Faucet While Brushing Your Teeth
Even if you are a fast brusher, experts estimate that around four gallons of water slips down the drain. That means if turn off the faucet while brushing, you could save 2,880 gallons of water each year. If everyone in the United States did, four times the Mississippi River’s annual water flow would be saved!

Bring Water With You
It’s easy to grab a bottle of water when you’re on the go. But each one-liter plastic bottle takes seven liters of water to produce. Reuse your water bottle by filling it up over the day. Or better yet, use a reusable water bottle that can be used again and again. If you brought your water with you for one year you could save up to 577 gallons of water each year. If everyone did, the amount of water saved could cover the Washington D.C. area by 52 feet.

Buy Recycled-Paper Products
Paper products made from 100% recycled paper require much less water than those made from virgin paper. If you and your family goes through four rolls of paper towels a week, but switched to recycled paper, you could save 637 gallons of water a year. If every family in America switched to recycled paper towels, the amount of water saved would equal what cascades over Niagara Falls each day!

Install A Low-Flow Showerhead
Switching to a low-flow showerhead cuts the water flow in half. Using this type of showerhead would save you enough water to fill a 15-foot aboveground pool when only taking a five-minute shower. The water you would save after switching showerheads would be 4,550 gallons of water. Imagine if everyone in America switched, the results would be enough water to fill about 2,100 Giant Stadiums!

Water Your Lawn in the Early Morning or Evening
Water evaporates throughout the day and prevents 14% of water from actually reaching the plants’ roots when you water mid-day. Watering in the morning or evening can save 87 gallons a week. Do this for one year and you will save 4,524 gallons of water. If every household did this, the amount of water saved would equal nine times the annual rainfall in Seattle!

Use the Low Setting on Your Dishwater
The light-wash setting on your machine cleans just as well as higher settings and reduces water up to 55%. Try washing your dishes on low for a year and save 2,860 gallons of water. If every household in America switched to washing on low, the amount of water saved would cover Rhode Island by a foot!

How to Leave Work at the Office

Friday, May 8th, 2009

We’ve all had rough days at the office and it’s no fun going home with the burden of an unsuccessful workweek. Moreover, men and women are working longer hours at the office than ever before. During these unpredictable times, companies may be demanding more from their employees, but it is possible to leave work stress at the office. Here’s how.

Prioritize: First start by making a list of your responsibilities. Ask yourself which elements of your life are your priorities. Then, rank them. Use this tool for your tasks at work as well. Knowing what comes first is half the battle. The rest is simply following through with what is important to you.

Be Realistic: Being realistic means knowing what you can handle. We all want to do it all, but few can actually pull it off. Being realistic means that you know what can be accomplished in a day. It might result in scaling back a few hours at work or offering duties to junior employees. You’ll be much happier and your work will not suffer.

Organize:
Give yourself time to organize. Declare one hour of everyday for yourself—close your office door for uninterrupted time. If it’s first thing in the morning, make a list of what you will accomplish that day: listen to voicemails and respond to emails. Don’t let things pile up until they are out of control. Accomplishing organization will shave off a couple hours out of your workday.

Respect Technology:
With the convenient technology we have available to us these days, it’s so easy to bring work home with us. PDA devices, cell phones, and laptops make it possible for anyone to reach you at any time. So it must be up to you to turn off these devices when you are not at work. Define your work hours and adhere to them.

Easy Remedies for E-mail Headaches

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Has e-mail ever gotten you into a pickle? The technology available to us today is often useful and efficient. At times, however, it can be more of a headache than of help. Here are some trouble-shooting tips to make e-mail writing less painful.

Archive Your Inbox: Practice having an empty inbox at all times by creating archive folders for former messages for each of the projects you’re working on. Once the task in the message is complete, file the message into the appropriate folder. This will allow you to be able to look up old messages as well as see what messages are new and require imminent action.

Save Attachments: When you receive a document as an attachment, be sure to save it onto your hard drive immediately. This will ensure you will have the document at your fingertips when you need it. To save it, open the attachment, go to FILE, and press, SAVE AS. Name the document and file it in the appropriate folder.

Auto Signature: Most e-mail programs have the capacity to attach your signature on every sent message. Having your name, phone number, and address automatically attached to every message will make sure the recipient has all of your pertinent information, even if you forget to include it.

The Best and Worst NFL Picks of All Time!

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Are you ready for some football? It’s that time of year—the NFL teams have picked their players and spring training is about to begin. Looking back, we’ll consider who soared and who fumbled—on and off the field—with the best and worst NFL drafts of all time!

Art Schlichter: Worst
Drafted to the Colts in 1982, Schlichter was not only a disappointment on the field, his gambling problems landed him in over $700,000 in debt! Schlichter was refused the opportunity to sign another contract and eventually he was arrested for being involved in a multimillion-dollar sports betting operation. In 1988, Schlichter filed for bankruptcy.

Andre Ware: Worst
Being the first black quarterback to win the Heisman, expectations were high for Andre Ware. The Lions drafted Ware in 1988 with hopes of him leading Detroit to its first Super Bowl title. Unfortunately, Ware was unable to hack it and instead played for the Canadian Football League and NFL Europe.

Heath Shuler: Worst
Picked to be the next big thing, Shuler was drafted by the Redskins with high hopes. But he paled in comparison to his fellow teammate Gus Frerotte and lost quarterback status as a rookie. Soon Shuler was traded to the Saints in 1997, but shortly after a foot injury ended his football career. But all ended well for Shuler as he is now a member of the House of Representatives for his home state.

Peyton Manning: Best
In 1998, Manning joined the Colts. During his first ten years in the NFL, Manning surpasses any quarterback’s first ten years and has led to more wins and passes. He’s also second on the all time passer rating list. But, Manning may be most well known for his win at the Super Bowl, which earned him two MVP awards.

John Elway: Best
Known for his perseverance, Elway won two consecutive Super Bowls the last two years of his career—earning him Super Bowl MVP the last game of his career. During his 16-year career, Elway was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. But Elway was not only a gifted football athlete; he was also drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 1979 baseball draft.

Barry Sanders: Best
Drafted to the Lions in 1989, the slight 5’8’’ agile Sanders went on to rush over 1,000 yards in only ten seasons. Sanders made it to the Pro-Bowl every seasons and averaged five yards per carry for his career. When Sanders retired, he was just short of being the all-time leading rusher for his career.
