Summer Survival Guide

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The mercury in your thermometer is rising and you are lowering the temperature on your air conditioner. The lazy days of summer have arrived. While we are enjoying the warm weather and all of the activities that come along with it, it’s important to remember some not-so-pleasant happenings that take place during summer, too! When at the beach, lounging in the yard, or barbequing with friends, keep in mind these simple tips that will help you tackle summer’s bumps without a hitch.

Fish hook: Fishing is one of the most relaxing summertime past-times. But, it’s no fun when the only thing you catch is your own finger. Luckily, these wounds are usually small and close up fast. Be sure to wash the wound with soap and water right away and apply a layer of antibiotic cream. Don’t forget to look at your recent medical records óyou may need a tetanus booster is you haven’t had one in the past five years.

Overheated: If you forget to stay hydrated in the hot summer sun, you may find yourself overheated. Heat exhaustion is common and includes symptoms such as nausea  headache and feeling faint. To relieve heat exhaustion, immediately find a cool, shady spot to rest. Then, drink lots of fluids like sports drinks and water.

Burn: We all know to apply plenty of sunscreen during the summer months, but you might just find yourself with another type of burnófrom the barbeque! If you burn yourself while barbequing or cooking, immediately apply cold water. Once it feels better, clean the burn with soap and water. Then, apply antibiotic cream and a bandage. If it still hurts, take ibuprofen for the pain.

Sting: Being outside is one of summer’s better perks. But, you’ve got to share the environment with the insects too, sometimes you might just get stung! First, try to remove the stinger by scraping the skin, elevate the area of the sting and apply ice. If your sting becomes painful, itchy and bothersome, take ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain medication.

Top Five Products to Own

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

With all of the new products on the market, consumers often feel overloaded by choices. Shopping isn’t as simple as it used to be. Below, find the top ten products that run efficiently and make your life easier!

Steam washers and dryers: During the wash cycle, you can choose to add steam which helps loosen tough stains. Add steam while drying and relax wrinkles from dry clothing. The biggest upside: No more trips to the dry cleaners.

Coffee Maker: A good coffee maker will last for years and give you cup after cup of delicious coffee. Look for one that brews quickly, includes a permanent coffee filter, water filtration, and a light that shows you how long your coffee has been sitting. Making your own coffee everyday will eventually save you lots of cash.

Reusable Water Bottle:
It may sound simple but owning a reusable BPA-free water bottle will save you loads of money in the future.

Set of Knives:
Owning a collection of top-quality knives will change your cooking experience. Look for knives with fully forged, high-carbon, bolstered-steel blades that hold a razor edge. A good set of knives should last several years.

Sneakers: Having a good pair of sneaker is essential for the health of your feet, knees, and back. When trying on, make sure the front of the shoe is flexible. Also, try wiggling your toes, and rocking and rolling from heel to toe and back to ensure a good fit.

Shortcuts for Everyday Tasks

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Does it seem like there are just not enough hours in the day? Between work, soccer practice and everything in between, you might feel like you need an extra pair of hands to get everything in the day accomplished. You can rest assured knowing that simple tools exist to get you from point A to point B faster and easier!

Get Flowers to Bloom

If you would like your blooms to blossom at a quicker speed, try these easy tips: cut the stems at an angle and then place the flowers in warm water. If the blooms need more of a nudge, use a blow-dryer with a diffuser to trick the flowers that they are outside in the sunshine. Your bouquet will blossom in time!

Get Your Daily Vitamins
Getting your daily dose of vitamins may be as easy as eating breakfast. Check the labels of your favorite cerealóit may just be fortified with all the vitamins you need. If not, find a cereal that has them all, like Total. Don’t forget the milk, it will add even more vitamins to your diet.

Keep Up To Date on Your Current Events
If it seems like you’re always the last to know about what’s going on in the world, these connections will bring you up to speed: Scan web sites that allow access to any newspaper in the country. Or, try listening to the news while doing mundane duties and chores. When you do watch TV, simply watch a 30-minute roundup to fill you in.

Thaw Meat

When you’re fixing a fast dinner, you may be looking for a quick way to defrost your meat. Think ahead and wrap small portions in re-sealable packages before you freeze them. When you’re ready to use your cuts, soak the meatloin the bagsloin cold water for about two hours.

Run Errands
If you have a day of errands ahead of you, try planning your stops in a clockwise direction. This way you can drop things off on the way and pick them up while heading home. Also, put a cooler in your car so when you pick up perishables, you don’t have to go home immediately.

Home Improvements You Can Handle

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

We are all looking for ways to save a little money here and there. One of the most straightforward tips for homeowners is make your own improvements. It may sound daunting, but if you have a little time and lots of determination your DIY duties will be accomplished in no time!

Curb Appeal
If the outside of your home needs a makeover there is no longer a need to call your local landscaper. Instead, focus on a often forgotten key aspect of your home: your mailbox. Try adding flowers around the base of the box along with new numbers to spruce it and add to your home’s exterior attractiveness.

Clean Outdoors
To clean patio furniture all you will need is a garden hose, all-purpose cleaner, a scrub brush, and a little elbow grease. Take a few minutes out of your day to keep your outdoor furniture looking like new.

Wallpaper Removal
Instead of spending loads of time and money on stripping wallpaper try the direct-painting approach. Head to you local hardware store for a mud-knife and joint compound to smooth the seams of your existing wallpaper. Now, you’re ready to paint!

Spray Painting
If you have listless wooden furniture around your home that desperately needs a pick-me-up, try spraying a fresh coat of paint. Take small risks with bright, bold colors and you’ll bring life back into your home.

Patching Holes
Are there tiny holes in your walls from old pictures? Smooth out your walls by filling in the holes with just a little dab of spackle. Do it yourself and save the money for larger home improvements.

Budget Friendly Family Fun

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Spending time together as a family does not have to mean lofty summer vacations. There are plenty of activities for you and your family in your hometown and even in your own backyard. What’s important is the time you are spending together and having a little fun! Here are some ideas to get you started.

Movie and Pizza Night: This is a no-brainer! You may not get to communicate during the movie, but there will be lots to discuss over a hot pizza!

Eat Out: This doesn’t mean that you have to take the entire family to a restaurant, but instead, go outdoors. Plan a picnic or barbeque and have a family dinner under the stars.

Cook together: Pull the whole family together to create an entire meal. Help your kids break eggs or sprinkle in shredded cheese. This is guaranteed to inspire lots of laughs.

Garden: Kids love to dig holes! Use this to your advantage and have them help you plant a vegetable garden or pull out weeds. Enjoy the benefits of fresh air and fresh veggies, too!

Story Time: Visit your local library and allow your kids to pick out what books they’d like to read before bed time. Make going to bed a family event. Gather round and read stories together until the little ones doze off.

Take a Dip in a Natural Pool

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

As we are becoming more aware of the long-term effects chemicals are having on us, it’s important to consider alternative ways to keep ourselves healthy. One area to explore is the newest trend in swimming, natural pools! See below for the benefits of natural pools!

Natural pools contain salt water that makes its own chlorine. This chlorine is considerably less harsh than traditional chlorine pools, and you don’t have to handle it either. This also means no more dry skin, green hair or fading swimsuits!

Salt water pools are generally easier to maintain. The pool’s water runs through a control box system that automatically electrifies the water as needed, producing chlorine. This means that no algae is produced and you’ll spend less time dealing with the problem of an off-balance PH level.

Finally, beside the health benefits, natural salt water pools will eventually save you money! Chlorine is very expensive and over time you’ll see the results add up.
